Title: Design and Industrial Engineering

Abstract
Design is at the heart of engineering, and in most engineering
disciplines, contemporary design practice involves the use of very
powerful software tools which provide an integrated platform for
authoring and editing designs, and for analyzing them from a variety
of perspectives. At one time, design was a central theme in
Industrial Engineering, and IE's were involved in facility design,
material handling systems design, and even business system
design. Today, in most IE curricula, design plays at best a minor
role, and one that involves only very simple, poorly integrated
software tools. This talk will explore the reasons for decline of
design in Industrial Engineering, and the opportunities afforded by
PLM technologies for a rebirth of design, based on powerful,
integrated design software applications. Progress at Georgia Tech
toward that goal will be described.
